Meade, George Gordon

soldier, was born Dec. 31, 1815, in Cadiz, Spain.

He took an active part in many of the noted battles of the civil war, but his name will ever be identified with the great battle of Gettysburg, which he commanded on the first, second and third days of July, 1863, the victory of which produced such decided results. In 1864 he was promoted to major-general in the United States army, and as a special honor was given the command of the grand review which took place in Washington after the close of the war. He died Nov. 6, 1872, in Philadelphia, Pa.
