Mcpherson, James Birdseye

soldier, was born Nov. 14, 1828, in Sandusky, Ohio. In 1853 he graduated from the United States military academy; served with distinction through the civil war, and attained the rank of major-general of volunteers. He was a superb rider, and the black horse which bore him to death, and which he had ridden through every battle from Shiloh, seemed to be almost equally inspired with himself amid the smoke and carnage of battle. He fell dead July 22, 1864, pierced by several bullets, while making an assault on the confederates near Atlanta, Ga.
