Mahan, Oliver P
soldier, lawyer, was born Sept. 29, 1836, in Putnam county, Ind. He is one of the foremost lawyers of central Indiana at Lebanon; and in 1896 was a candidate for judge of the twentieth judicial circuit court of Indiana.
MAHANY, ROWLAND BLENNER- HASSETT, educator, journalist, congressman, was born Sept. 28, 1864, in Buffalo, N. Y. He was associate editor of the Buffalo Express in 1888; and became instructor in history and literature in the high school in 1889. He was appointed secretary of legation to Chile in 1890; accredited envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary to Ecuador in 1892. He was nominated for congress in 1892.
He returned to Ecuador in 1893, and concluded the Santos treaty, negotiations for which had remained unsettled for nearly ten years. He was elected in 1894 from New York to the fifty-fourth and fiftyfifth congresses as a republican.
