Mcenery, Samuel Douglas

soldier, lawyer, jurist, governor, United States senator, was born May 28, 1837, in Monroe, La. He entered the confederate army in 1861, and served throughout the war. After its close he entered upon the practice of law in Monroe, La.

In 1879 he was elected lieutenant-governor of the state; and by the death of Gov. Wiltz in 1881 became governor of Louisiana. In 1883 he was elected governor for the full term of four years. In 1888 he was appointed for a term of twelve years as associate justice of the supreme court. In 1896 he was elected to the United States senate for term expiring in 1903.
