Lossing, Benson John

historian, engraver, author, was born Feb. 12, 1813, in Dutchess county, N. Y. He was an artist and wood-engraver of Poughkeepsie who made many valuable contributions to American history. His later years were spent at Dover Plains, N. Y. He was the author of Pictorial Field-Book of the Revolution; Pictorial Field-Book of the War of 1812; Pictorial Field-Book of the Civil War; Life of General Philip Schuyler; The Two Spies: Nathan Hale and John André; Cyclopædia of United States History; Mary and Martha Washington; History of the United States Navy for Boys; Mount Vernon and Its Associations; The Empire State, a History of New York; Life of Washington; Lives of the Presidents; and other works. He died in 1891.
