Loring, George Bailey

surgeon, congressman, was born Nov. 8, 1817, in North Andover, Mass. His father was the Rev. Bailey Loring, pastor of the unitarian church of that city. Dr. Loring graduated from Harvard college in 1837, studied medicine under Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes; and was made United States surgeon in the Chelsea hospital. He afterward devoted himself to agriculture and public affairs. He was sent as a member of congress at Washington from Salem for two terms; was United States commissioner of agriculture under President Garfield and during President Arthur's administration; and was made United States minister to Lisbon by President Harrison. He was the author of many works on agriculture and education, and a work entitled A Year in Portugal, which was completed just before his death in September, 1891.
