Low, Philip Burrill

soldier, merchant, congressman, was born May 6, 1836, in Chelsea, Mass. He was appointed acting ensign in the United States navy and served in the North Atlantic squadron during 1862-63. He resigned and entered commercial circles of Boston until 1865, when he removed to New York, where he has since been identified with the shipping and maritime interests. He received the nomination for congress by acclamation in 1894 as the republican candidate in the fifteenth New York district; and was elected to the fiftyfourth and re-elected to the fifty-fifth congress as a republican.
