Johnston, Samuel
lawyer, jurist, United States senator, was born Dec. 15, 1733, in Scotland. He was governor of North Carolina from 1787 to 1789; was president of the convention of that state which ratified the federal constitution; and was a member of congress from 1780 to 1782. In 1789 he was appointed a senator from North Carolina, and served until 1793. He was afterward a judge of the supreme court of law and equity.
He died Aug. 18, 1816, in Sherwarkey, N. C.
