Hoyne, Thomas
lawyer, was born Feb. 11, 1817, in New York city. He was appointed United States district attorney for Illinois in 1853, and in 1859 was made United States marshal for the northern district of Illinois. After the great fire of 1871 he presided at a meeting to organize the free public library of Chicago, and was president of its first board of directors. In 1877 he prepared a history of the library up to that date. He died July 27, 1883, near Carleton Station, N. Y.
