Howard, Benjamin Chew

soldier, congressman, governor, was born Nov. 5, 1791, in Baltimore county, Md. He commanded a volunteer company at the battle of North Point in 1814. He was a presidential elector in 1828; and was a representative in congress from Maryland from 1829 to 1833, and again from 1835 to 1839.

From 1835 to 1850 he was a general of militia; was a reporter of the decisions of the supreme court of the United States from 1843 to 1862; and was democratic candidate for governor of Maryland. in 1861. He was also a delegate to the peace congress of 1861. He died March 6, 1872, in Baltimore, Md.
