Bennett, Hiram P
jurist, legislator, congressman, was born Sept. 2, 1826, in Carthage, Maine. In 1852 he was elected to a judgeship in western Iowa. He removed to Nebraska territory in 1854, and was at once elected a member of the territorial council; in 1858 was re-elected to the Nebraska legislature, and made speaker of the house. He removed to Colorado territory in 1859, and was chosen a delegate therefrom to the thirty-seventh congress; and in 1862 was re-elected to the thirty-eighth congress. In 1867 he was appointed secretary of the territory of Colorado.
