Harper, Samuel A

lawyer, politician, was born Jan. 9, 1855, in Hazel Green, Wis. During 1890-94 he was United States attorney for the western district of Wisconsin; and during 1894- 98 was president of the Wisconsin State Republican league at Madison, Wis.

Harper, William M

journalist, state senator, was born Jan. 21, 1850, in Pittsburg, Pa. He is a successful journalist; and in 1897 was elected to the state senate of the Ohio general assembly.

Harries, William Henry

soldier, lawyer, congressman, was born Jan. 15, 1843, in Montgomery county, Ohio. In 1864 he was commissioned captain of company F, third United States veteran volunteers, and was discharged from the army April 17, 1866. He has been county attorney two terms; and was elected to the fifty-second congress as a democrat.

He was appointed collector of internal revenue in 1894 for the state of Minnesota.

Harrigan, Edward

actor, author, was born in 1845, in New York. He is an actor and playwright of New York city, among whose many plays of low life in the metropolis are, Squatter Sovereignty; and Cordelia's Aspirations.

Harrigan, Laurence

public officer, legislator, was born in 1835, in Ireland. In 1857 he was appointed on the St. Louis police force, and was rapidly promoted, and finally became chief of police of that city. During President Cleveland's first term Mr. Harrigan was appointed appraiser of the Port of St.

Louis. In 1880 he served as a member in the Missouri legislature.

Harrington, George

diplomat, business man, was born in Massachusetts.

He was for many years a clerk in the treasury department at Washington; chief clerk under S. P. Chase; and in 1861 was appointed assistant secretary of that department. Between the years 1865 and 1869 he was minister resident to Switzerland; and was subsequently president of a telegraph company in New York city.

Harrington, Henry W

lawyer, congressman, was born Sept. 12, 1825, in Otsego county, N. Y. He was chosen a delegate to the Charleston convention in 1860 from Indiana; and in 1862 was elected a representative from Indiana to the thirty-eighth congress. He was a delegate to the New York convention of 1868.

Harrington, Jonathan

patriot, was born July 8, 1757, in Lexington, Mass.

He was the last survivor of the minutemen who were called out to appear in arms at Lexington on the 19th of April, 1775. He died March 28, 1854.

Harrington, William P

railroad president, was born April 17, 1826, in Nobleboro, Maine. Since 1885 he has been president of the Colusa and Lake railroad at Colusa, Cal.

Harris, Alfred W

soldier, author, poet, was born Jan. 27, 1842, in Louisville, Ky. He served through the war in the union army. He has been in the United States internal revenue service in Louisville, Ky.; and is the author of several prose works, and a volume of poems.

Harris, Amanda Bartlett

author, was born in 1824, in New Hampshire. She is a writer whose life has been mainly spent at her birthplace, Warner, N. H. She is the author of Christ our Friend; Thy Will be Done; The Duty of Uniting with the Church; Summer's Autographs; How we Went Birds'-Nesting, republished as Field, Wood, and Meadow Rambles; Wild Flowers and Where They Grow; Door-yard Folks; Pleasant Authors for Young Folks; American Authors for Young Folks; and The Luck of Edenhall.

Harris, Benjamin Gwinn

agriculturist, lawyer, congressman, was born Dec. 13, 1806, near Leonardstown, Md. In 1832 he was elected to the house of delegates of Maryland, and re-elected in 1833, 1836, 1849, 1852, and 1856. In 1863 he was elected a representative from Maryland to the thirty-eighth congress, and was reelected to the thirty-ninth congress.
