Guthrie, James
lawyer, banker, United States senator, born Dec. 5, 1792, in Nelson county, Ky., He served nine years in the legislature of Kentucky, and six years in the state senate. After originating, he became president of the Louisville and Nashville railroad. In 1853 he went into President Pierce's cabinet as secretary of the treasury, and was a delegate to the Chicago convention of 1864. He was elected a senator in congress from Kentucky, in 1865, for the term ending in 1871. He died March 13, 1869, in Louisville, Ky. .
