Greene, William
lawyer, jurist, state legislator, governor, was born Aug. 16, 1731, in Warwick, R. I. He was chief justice of the colony, and was governor of the state from 1778 to 1786; also for many years speaker of the house; and became governor of Rhode Island. He died Nov. 29, 1809, in Warwick, R. I. he served with distinction as mayor of Lowell. In 1884 he was a delegate to the national republican convention; in 1885 was a member of the Massachusetts house of representatives; and in 1888 was a member of congress. He has been city solicitor of Lowell; was commissioner of insolvency of Middlesex county in 1892; and was elected governor of Massachusetts in 1895. He served in the union army during 1863-64 in the commissary department. He died in 1896.
