Gallagher, Hugh P
clergyman, philanthropist, was born in 1815, in Ireland. In 1844 he was made president of the Theological seminary of Pittsburg, Pa. The same year he founded St. Francis' college for boys, and also founded and edited the Pittsburg Catholic. In 1850 he introduced the sisters of mercy, for whom he established St. Aloysius' academy for girls. In 1852 he moved to California, built a church in Benicia; and in 1853 established the Catholic Standard.
He died in March, 1882, in San Francisco, Cal.
