Caldwell, Alexander

soldier, congressman, was born March 1, 1830, in Huntington county, Pa. He enlisted in 1847 as a soldier in the Mexican war, entering his father's company, who was killed at one of the gates of the city of Mexico. He went in 1861 to Kansas, where he engaged in the transportation of military supplies to the various posts on the plains, and was afterward largely interested in the building of railroads and bridges. He was elected to the United States senate as a republican, and served during 1871-77.
