Ferry, Orris Sanford

soldier, lawyer, jurist, congressman, United States senator, was born Aug. 15, 1823, in Bethel, Conn. In 1849 he was appointed judge of probate for the district of Norwalk, and was elected to the state senate in 1855 and 1856. In 1856 he was appointed state's attorney for the county of Fairfield, which position he continued to fill until 1859, when he was elected a representative to the thirty-sixth congress from Connecticut. He served with distinction as a colonel and brigadier-general in the war for the union. In 1866 he was elected a senator in congress for the term commencing March, 1867, and ending in 1873. He was a delegate to the Philadelphia loyalists' convention of 1866 and to the soldiers' convention, held at Pittsburg in 1872. He was re-elected to the United States senate for six years, for a second full term. He died Nov. 21, 1875, in South Norwalk, Conn.
