Ewell, Philander

merchant, manufacturer, was born March 3, 1809, in Middlebury, N. Y. In 1855 he was a representative in the New York state legislature; subsequently he engaged in farming in Michigan; and since 1869 has been the proprietor of the Stony Creek Woolen mills of Rochester, Mich.

Ewell, Richard Stoddert

soldier, was born Feb. 18, 1817, in Georgetown, D. C. During the civil war he served in the confederate army; and was promoted to major-general. He died Jan. 25, 1872, in Springfield, Tenn.

Ewen, Mary Cecilia

actress, was born in 1836 in New York city. Among her greatest successes in the various theaters where she played were Life in New York; Child of the Regiment; and Pride of the Market. She died Nov. 10, 1.866, in New York city.

Ewing, Andrew

congressman, was born in Tennessee. He was a representative in congress from 1849 to 1851; and took part in the rebellion as a confederate. He died June 16, 1864, in Atlanta, Ga.

Ewing, Charles

lawyer, jurist, was born July 8, 1780, in Burlington county, N. J. He graduated at the New Jersey college in 1798; was admitted to the bar in 1802, and practiced law at Trenton.

He became a councilor in 1812; was chief justice of the state from 1824 to his death. He received the degree of LL. D. from Jefferson college. He was brilliant lawyer and astute judge. He died Aug. 5, 1832, in Trenton, N. J. a

Ewing, Edwin H

congressman, was born in Tennessee. He was a representative in congress from Tennessee from 1845 to 1847; and took part in the rebellion.

Ewing, Elie Metcalf

lawyer, capitalist, was born Jan. 9, 1856, in Elizaville, Ky. In 1879 he was admitted to the bar, and the following year moved to Waco, Texas. In 1879 he was assistant chief clerk of the Kentucky state senate.

He has attained success as an expert examiner of land titles; and has been prominently identified with the financial prosperity of his adopted state.

Ewing, Finis

clergyman, author, was born June 10, 1773, in Bedford county, Pa.

He was a presbyterian clergyman who with two others organized the Cumberland presbyterian church in 1810. He was the author of Lectures on Divinity, which is an exposition of the doctrines of his sect. He died July 4, 1841, in Lexington, Mo.

Ewing, Hugh Boyle

soldier, diplomat, author, was born Oct. 31, 1826, in Lancaster, Ohio. He was a general in the federal army during the civil war, and minister to the Netherlands in 1866- 70. Heis the author of A Castle in the Air; and Ladron, a Tale of Early California.

Ewing, John

congressman, was born at sea, while his parents were on their way from Ireland to Baltimore. He served in both branches of the legislature of Indiana; and was a representative of that state in congress from 1833 to 1835, and again from 1837 to 1839. He died in 1857 in Vincennes, Ind.

Ewing, John

clergyman, author, was born June 22, 1732, in Nottingham, Md. He was a presbyterian clergyman of Philadelphia, provost of the university of Pennsylvania, 1777-1802, and eminent in his day as a scientific observer. He published an Account of the Transit of Venus, and his Lectures on Natural Philosophy were issued after his death. He died Sept. 8, 1802, in Nottingham, Md.
