He was a major in the United States army during the civil war; and in 1867 was appointed United States attorney for the north- In 1874 he was elected lieutenant-governor of New York; received the re-election in 1876; and was elected to the forty-eighth congress as a democrat. He was the author of A Life of Grover Cleveland. He died March 26, 1888, in Savannah, Ga. district of New York. ern
