Oates, William C
soldier, lawyer, state legislator, congressman, governor, was born Nov. 30, 1835, in Bullock county, Ala. He was a representative in the Alabama state legislature from 1870 to 1872; and was a member of the state constitutional convention of 1875. He was elected a representative from Alabama to the forty-seventh, forty-eighth, fortyninth, fiftieth, fifty-first, fifty-second and fifty-third congresses as a democrat. In 1894 he was elected governor of Alabama; and declined a second term. He now practices law in Montgomery, Ala.
OBENCHAIN, WILLIAM ALEXAN- DER, college president, was born April 27, 1841, in Buchanan, Va. In 1883 he was chosen president of Ogden college of Bowling Green, Ky.
