Davis, David (Lawyer jurist United States)

lawyer, jurist, United States senator, was born March 9, 1815, in Cecil county, Md. He was elected to the Illinois state legislature; and in 1848 was elected judge of the eighth judicial circuit of the state; re-elected in 1855 and also in 1861. He was appointed a justice of the supreme court of the United States; and was a delegate-at-large to the Chicago convention of 1860, which nominated Mr. Lincoln for president. He resigned from the supreme bench in 1877 to take his seat as United States senator from Illinois for the term of six years. He died June 25, 1886.
