Dickerson, Mahlon
lawyer, jurist, governor, United States senator, was born April 17, 1770, in Morris county, N. J. He was recorder of the city of Philadelphia, and subsequently quartermaster-general of the state. He returned to New Jersey, and was elected to the legislature of that state. He was judge of the supreme court of New Jersey; was elected governor of that state in 1815, and held the office until 1817, when he was chosen United States senator from New Jersey, and continued in that office for sixteen years. In 1834 he became secretary of the navy in the cabinet of President Jackson, and held that office until 1838, some two years after the accession of President Van Buren.
For two years he was president of the American institute. He died Oct. 5, 1853, in Morris county, N. J.
