Champlin, Stephen

naval officer, was born Nov. 17, 1789, in South Kingston, R. I. He was a commodore in the United States navy. He died Feb. 20, 1870, in Buffalo, N. Y.

CHAMPLIN, STEPHEN GARDNER, soldier, lawyer, was born July 1, 1827, in Kingston, N. Y. He was a noted lawyer; recorder of the city of Grand Rapids, Mich., and served as prosecuting attorney of Kent county. In April, 1861, he became major in the third regiment Michigan volunteers; was commissioned colonel in October of the same year; and in 1862 became a brigadier-general. He died Jan. 24, 1864, from wounds received at Fair Oaks, Va.
