Champlin, John W
lawyer, jurist, was born Feb. 17, 1831, in Kingston, N.
Y. He received an academical education; practiced civil engineering for awhile; and in 1855 began the practice of law in Grand Rapids, Mich. In 1857 he drew up the revised city charter of Grand Rapids, and has been recorder, attorney, and mayor of that city. In 1884 he was elected for eight years as justice of the supreme court of Michigan; and was chief justice in 1890-91. During 1891-97 he was professor of law in the university of Michigan, lecturing on corporations and torts.
