physician, was born Jan. 19, 1854, in Mansfield, Ohio. In 1884 he moved to St. Louis, Mo., where he soon established a large and lucrative practice.

BURNETT, MRS. FRANCES ELIZA (HODGSON), author, was born Nov. 24, 1849, in England. She is a popular writer of fiction, whose first successful book was That Lass o' Lowrie's, a powerful tale of Lancashire life. Her other works, of varying degrees of excellence, include Earlier Stories, first and second series; Haworth; A Fair Barbarian; Through One Administration; Louisiana; Esmeralda; Vagabondia, Surly Tim, and Other Stories; The Pretty Sister of Jose; A Lady of Quality. As a writer for young people her success has been very marked; and besides Little Lord Fauntleroy, the most popular of all her books, her juvenile writings comprise Sara Crewe; Piccino and Other Child Stories; Little Saint Elizabeth; Two Little Pilgrims' Progress; Giovanni and the Other; and The One I Knew the Best of All, an autobiographic tale.
