Burnet, Jacob
lawyer, jurist, United States senator, author, was born Feb. 22, 1770, in Newark, N. J. He was a member of the first legislative council of Ohio in 1799. In 1821 he was appointed one of the judges of the supreme court of Ohio, which commission he resigned in December, 1828, and was immediately afterward elected to the senate of the United States, to fill a vacancy, serving until 1831. He was the first president of the Astronomical Society of Cincinnati, and was for many years the president of the Colonization Society of Hamilton county. In 1847 he published a volume entitled Notes on the Early Settlement of the Northwestern Territory, which contained much interesting information, especially as to Ohio, the progress of which he witnessed from a territory. He died May 10, 1853, in Cincinnati, Ohio.
