Burke, Robert Emmet

soldier, lawyer, jurist, congressman, was born Aug. 1, 1847, in Tallapoosa county, Ala.

He volunteered as a private in company D, tenth Georgia cavalry, at the age of sixteen, and served until the close of the war. He removed to Texas in 1866 and located at Jefferson; and was admitted to the bar in November, 1870. He was elected county judge in 1878, serving three consecutive terms; and was elected district judge in 1888, and was re-elected in 1892 without opposition. He was elected to the fifty-fifth congress as a democrat.
