Burchard, Samuel D
soldier, manufacturer, congressman, was born July 17, 1836, in Leyden, N. Y. He was engaged in the manufacturing of woolen goods; was a lieutenant in the Missouri militia during the rebellion; was appointed a captain in the volunteer service, and as quartermaster was assigned to duty in New York, where he had charge of the purchase of forage for the seaboard armies; and was mustered out of service as a major. He returned to Wisconsin; and was elected to the state senate in 1872; and in 1874 was elected a representative to the forty-fourth congress.
BURCHARD, SAMUEL DICKINSON, clergyman, was born Sept. 6, 1812, in Steuben, N. Y. He was very successful as a pastor and lecturer, and was at different times chancellor of Ingham university and president of Rutgers female college. He stigmatized the democrats as the party of Rum, Romanism, and Rebellion. He died Sept. 25, 1891, in Saratoga, N. Y. was
