Buckland, Ralph Pomeroy

lawyer, state senator, congressman, was born Jan. 20, 1812, in Leyden, Mass. He was elected to the senate of Ohio in 1855 and 1857, serving four years. In 1861 he was appointed colonel of the seventy-second Ohio infantry, and fought in the battle of Shiloh as the commander of a brigade; and was made a brigadier-general in the winter of 1862-63, and in that capacity fought at Vicksburg. During his absence on the field in 1864 he was elected a representative from Ohio to the thirty-ninth congress, and re-elected to the fortieth congress as a republican.
