Brown, Charles Elwood

lawyer, soldier, congressman, was born July 4, 1834, in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1861 he enlisted in the union army; served throughout the civil war, attained the rank of colonel and brevet brigadier-general. In the Atlanta campaign, in 1864, he commanded his regiment and lost a leg. In 1872 he was appointed United States pension agent at Cincinnati, serving four years; and in 1884, was elected a representative from Ohio to the forty-ninth congress, and re-elected to the fiftieth congress as a republican.
