legislator, congressman, governor. He early took an interest in military affairs and became a general of militia. He was elected to the state legislature in 1838, and in one or the other of the two houses served therein for nearly twenty years. He was for ten years, from 1857, comptroller of the state.
He was a presidential elector from 1868; and in 1869 was appointed a collector of internal revenue. After the additional service of four years in the state senate in 1872, he was elected lieutenant-governor; and on the death of Governor Caldwell, in 1874, became the governor of the state.
He was also a justice of Wayne county; and was elected a representative from North Carolina to the forty-fifth congress.
