Breck, Samuel

soldier, was born Feb. 25, 1834, in Middleborough, Mass.

In 1851 he entered the United States mili-. tary academy at West Point, N. Y.; he graduated four years later, and was promoted in the army to brevet second lieutenant of artillery. He went through all the grades and made brigadier general in the United States army in 1865, was for diligent, faithful and meritorious services during the rebellion. Since 1870 he has served in California, New York, Washington, D. C., Minnesota, Omaha, and is now serving on Governor's Island, N. Y. In 1887 he was appointed lieutenant-colonel, assistant adjutant general; and in 1893 was made colonel and assistant adjutant general.
