Bowdoin, James
statesman, philanthropist, was born Aug. 8, 1727, in Boston, Mass. In 1756 he was state senator and councilor; in 1769 was removed by the governor from the position of councilor, for his opposition to the royal government, and was at once elected representative. In 1785-86 was governor of Massachusetts. He was the author of a volume of poems. Bowdoin college, of Brunswick, Maine, was named in his honor, but endowed by his son James. He died Nov. 6, 1790, in Boston, Mass.
