Berghoff, John T
physician, surgeon, inventor, was born Nov. 17, 1823, in Germany. After studying pharmacy he emigrated to the United States in 1846. In 1850 he opened a drug store in St. Louis, Mo.; studied medicine in the St. Louis medithe civil war. cal college; and in 1860 continued the practice of his profession in St. Joseph, Mo. He served as a surgeon in the union army during He held the position of professor of the principles and practice of surgery in the Northwestern medical college of St. Joseph, Mo., from 1879 until his death. He invented a universal apparatus or splint for the treatment of fracture of the leg, injuries and diseases of the hip, knee, and ankle joints. He delivered numerous papers before the Missouri state medical association, and other medical societies.
