Bender, John S
civil engineer, lawyer, was born Jan. 26, 1827, near Carlisle, Pa. He was a miller by trade until 1852; a land surveyor and civil engineer from choice until 1856; and since that time has been engaged in the practice of law.
Since 1854 he has taken great interest in politics; was contingent elector for Douglas; supported Lincoln during the war of 1861; and in 1878 joined the independent movement for reform; was elector at large in Indiana for Butler; and he has held many other prominent offices in his county and state for the furtherance of the movement. He is the author of A Hoosier's Experience in Europe; Money: Its Definition; and other works.
