Black, John Charles

soldier, lawyer, was born Jan. 27, 1839, in Lexington, Miss. He graduated from the Wabash college of Crawfordsville. During the civil war he served as colonel in the thirty-seventh Illinois volunteers; and was brevetted brigadier-general United States volunteers. He was commissioner of pensions, congressman-at-large from illinois; and United States attorney for the northern district of Illinois. He is best known as an eminent lawyer, practicing in Chicago and before the department in Washington, and in the supreme courts of Illinois and the United States.
