Bell, Charles H
lawyer, legislator, United States senator, governor, was born Νον. 18, 1823, in Chester, N. H. He received a collegiate education, graduating at Dartmouth college in 1844; and studied and practiced law. He was solicitor for Rockingham county from 1855 to 1865; was a representative in the legislature in 1858, 1859, and 1860; and the last year as speaker. He was a state senator in 1803 and 1864; president of the senate the last year; and was again a member of the state house of representatives in 1872 and 1873. He was appointed a United States senator in 1879 to fill a vacancy. In 1880 he was elected governor of New Hampshire for the term of two years from June, 1881. He is the author of The Bench and Bar of New Hampshire.
