Bates, Laurence Webster

educator, was born Nov. 10, 1819, in Burlington county, N. J. He received his education in the Medford Quaker school of his native county. For several years he was the editor of prominent church paper, and has contributed extensively to current literature. He was president of the Maryland conference in 1860-61; president of the general conference in 1874; president of the general church convention in 1877; he has filled numerous high positions in the methodist episcopal church. During 1893-96 he was professor in the Westminster Theological seminary. He was chairman of the committee to compile a new hymn book; and is first president of the Christian Endeavor union, of the methodist protestant church. and BATES, MRS. MARGARET HOLMES, author, poet, was born Oct. 6, 1844, in Fremont, Ohio. She is the author of two novels entitled Manitou, and The Chamber Over the Gate, and her poems have appeared in several standard collections.
