Bateman, Newton
educator, college president, was born July 27, 1822, in Fairfield, N. J. He came to Illinois in 1833, and graduated from Illinois college in 1843. He assisted in organizing the State Teachers' association of Illinois in 1854. In 1858 he founded the Illinois Teacher, and was its first editor. He became state superintendent of public instruction of Illinois in 1859, and to this office he was re-elected four times. In 1860 he issued the first of the series of reports, which are recognized as classic authority concerning Illinois pedagogic law. In 1874 he was chosen president of Knox college. He died Oct. 21, 1897, in Galesburg, Ill.
