Barteau, Clark Russell

soldier, lawyer, was born April 7, 1835, near Cleveland, Ohio. He received his education in the Wesleyan university of Delaware, Ohio. Prior to the war he went south, and became principal of the Male academy of Hartsville, Tenn., in 1856; and two years later became the editor and owner of The Hartsville Plaindealer. During the war he was colonel of cavalry, known as Barteau's Second Tennessee, in the confederate service. He was known as a fighter; was cool but impetuous in action, and was wounded in many battles, including Shiloh, Murfreesboro, Franklin, Harrisburg, and Okolona; and on Dec. 6, 1864, was disabled for the rest of the war. In 1866 he was admitted to the bar; and in 1870 removed to Bartlett, Tenn., and practices law in Memphis.
