lawyer, congressman, was born Oct. 5, 1817, in Davidson county, Tenn. He was a lawyer by education and profession, and in 1841 was appointed American charge d'affaires to Portugal. He was a representative in congress from Tennessee from 1847 to 1849. He died Oct. 19, 1866, in St. Louis, Mo.

clergyman, author, poet, was born Aug. 4, 1833, in Mansfield, Conn. He has filled many important pastorates in the congregational church, and is the author of On Horseback in Cappadocia and many poems of merit have appeared from the pen of this eminent divine.

Barrows, Samuel June

clergyman, congressman, author, was May 26, 1845, in New York city. He was fifteen years chaplain of the fifth regiment Massachusetts militia, and was elected to the fifty-fifth congress as a republican. He is the author of The Shaybacks in Camp; The Baptist Meeting House; Science and Immortality; Isles and Shrines of Greece; and various other works.

Barrows, William

He was a congregational clergyman of Massachusetts, and the author of The Church and the Children; The Indian's Side of the Indian Question; Oregon, the Struggle for Possession; The United States of Yesterday and To-morrow; and Twelve Nights in the Hunter's Camp. He died in 1891.

He served in the confederate army during the civil war, and engaged in the practice of law at West Point, Mississippi. He was a state senator from 1875 to 1879; was a presidential elector in 1880, and was elected a representative from Mississippi to the forty-ninth and fiftieth congresses. a

clergyman, author, was born March 26, 1819, in Boston, Mass. He was a universalist clergyman, and the author of The Stetson Genealogy; and History of Massachusetts. He died Dec. 11, 1872, in St. Louis, Mo.

Barry, John Stewart

state senator, governor, was born Jan. 29, 1802, in Amherst, N. H. Upon the organization of the Michigan state government he was elected a state senator, and in 1841 chosen governor of the state. He was reelected in 1843, and also in 1849; and was also, on two occasions, a presidential elector. He died Jan. 14, 1870, in Constantine, Mich.
