Barnes, Demas
journalist, banker, congressman, was born April 4, 1887, in Canandaigua, N. Y. In 1866 he was elected as a democrat to the fortieth congress , where he served on the committees on banking and currency, and education and labor. He was active in procuring legislation for the construction of the Brooklyn bridge. The Brooklyn Eagle at one time belonged to him, and of the Brooklyn Argus he was the founder, continuing publication until 1877. He died May 1, 1888, in New York city.
