Baldwin, Henry Porter

state senator, governor, United States senator, was born Feb. 22, 1814, in Coventry, R. I.

In 1838 he moved to Detroit, Mich; became president of the Second national bank of Detroit; and was for two years a state senator. In 1868 he was elected governor of Michigan, to which position he brought a full store of general information gathered from foreign travel and the study of men and books; and re-elected in 1870 for a second term. In 1879 he was appointed United States senator to fill a vacancy.
