Bailey, Rufus William

educator, author, was born April 13, 1793, in North Yarmouth, Maine. In 1854 he was elected professor of languages in Austin college at Huntsville, Tex., and in 1858 became its president. He was the author of a series of newspaper letters on slavery, subsequently published in a volume under the title of The Issue; also of a volume of sermons entitled The Family Preacher; of letters to daughters entitled The Mother's Request; of a Primary Grammar; and of a Manual of English Grammar used extensively in southern schools. He died April 25, 1863, in Huntsville, Tex.
