Bailey, Gamaliel
journalist, was born Dec. 3, 1807, in Mount Holly, N. H.
The first number of the National Era, published under the auspices of the American and Foreign Anti-Slavery society, appeared in 1847, and of which publication he was editor. In 1848 an angry mob laid siege to the office for three days, and finally separated under the influence of an eloquent harangue by the editor. The Era, in which Uncle Tom's Cabin originally appeared, ably presented the opinions of the anti-slavery party. He died at sea June 5, 1859.
