Augur, Christopher Colon

soldier, was born in 1821 in New York. In 1843 he graduated from West Point; and during the next two years served frontier duty. In 1846 he took part in the Mexican war in the advance to the Rio Grande. In 1852 he was promoted captain; and served with great ability in the Indian troubles in Oregon during 1855-56. He served with distinction through the civil war; and in 1865 received the brevet of brigadier-general; and also the brevet of major-general. He commanded at Washington during 1863- 66, and was promoted colonel of the twelfth infantry. In 1869 he was made brigadier-general of the United States army; and was retired in 1885. His son, Jacob Arnold Augur, is also a graduate of West Point, and a captain in the fifth United States cavalry.
