Allston, Joseph
governor, was born in 1778 in South Carolina. He was a planter of education and ability; was several years a member of the South Carolina legislature; and was governor of that state from 1812 to 1814. He married a daughter of Aaron Burr, and for that reason was suspected, but unjustly, of being concerned in the questionable enterprises of that famous man. His wife was lost at sea on her passage from New York to Charleston in 1812. He died Sept. 10, 1816.
ALLSTON, ROBERT FRANCIS WITH- ERS, statesman, author, was born April 21, 1801, in All Saint's parish, S. C. He was a Carolina statesman well known at one time as an agricultural reformer. He was the author of Memoir on Rice; Essay on Seacoast Crops; and Report on Public Schools. He died April 7, 1864, near Georgetown, S. C.
