Allston, Washington

artist, author, was born Nov. 5, 1779, in Waccamaw, S. C. He was the foremost of American painters in his delineations of sacred history. Jacob's Dream; Elijah in the Desert; and Belshazzar's Feast, the latter on which he was at work when he died, are among his sacred historical paintings. He also possessed poetical talent of a high order, and was the author of Sylphs of the Seasons; Romance of Monaldi; and Lectures on Art. He died July 9, 1843, in Cambridge, Mass.
