Young, John Russell

lawyer, journalist, author, was born Nov. 20, 1841, in Dowington, Pa. In 1871 he went abroad as one of the foreign correspondents of the New York Herald, in which service he traversed the British Isles and the continent. In 1877 he accompanied General Grant in his famous tour around the world, which occupied two years; and he published the result of his observations in two volumes entitled Around the World with General Grant. On his return he resumed his position on the editorial staff of the New York Herald; and in 1882 was appointed United States minister to China. He is also the author of The Memorial History of Philadelphia.
