Yates, Richard

lawyer, congressman, United States senator, governor, was born Jan. 18, 1818, in Warsaw, Ky. He frequently served in the Illinois state legislature; was a representative in congress from Illinois from 1851 to 1855, and in 1861 was elected governor of Illinois for four years. He participated extensively in the raising of troops for the national army during the rebellion, and was elected a senator in congress from Illinois for the term commencing in 1865 and ending in 1871. He died Nov. 27, 1873, in St. Louis.
